Dispel a Myth

Key Takeaway

Wellbeing grows not from constantly checking how happy we feel, but from focusing on the factors that support us day to day. Positive psychology shifts attention away from chasing positive emotions and toward building meaning, supportive practices, and habits that fit into our lives. By understanding what brings us to life and intentionally slotting supportive practices into our days and weeks, we reduce rumination and create steadier, more sustainable wellbeing.

Let’s dispel a myth. There’s a balance. Whilst it’s really helpful to be a can-do person who focuses on how they can improve their happiness and wellbeing, what we don’t want to do is get too fixated on how happy am I, checking in with ourselves all the time, like we’re pursuing positive emotions. What we do want to do, and that’s why positive psychology helps, is focus on the factors that contribute to our wellbeing rather than just constantly asking ourselves how happy am I. When we know what supports us and gives us meaning, what brings us to life, then we’re able to focus on those things, and that’s where these practices come in as well. When we know what practices we can slot into our days and our weeks, we can focus on those as a way to support ourselves rather than this constant reflecting or ruminating on how we actually feel. Now, there’s obviously a balance. It’s important to check in with ourselves. We’ll be doing that today. But I really want to give you some of these insights, the factors that you can focus on to support yourself.

Reflection

Take a moment to reflect: ·When do I notice myself checking in on my happiness or emotions too often? ·What activities, values, or moments give me energy or meaning, even when life feels busy or uncertain? ·What is one small practice I could gently add to my day that would support me, rather than asking myself how I feel all the time?
