Mindful Hydration

Key Takeaway

Mindful hydration is not just about drinking more water, but about drinking the right amount, at the right times, and in a way that supports digestion, circulation, and overall balance.

Transcript

The next routine is mindful hydration. Most of us are aware of hydration, but in my practice I often see that many people are not doing it in the most supportive way. Hydration simply means providing water to the body. But mindful hydration is about what we drink, how we drink, and how much we drink. As a general principle, Ayurveda recommends warm water, as it is easier to digest and supports absorption. When to Drink Water Ideally, once you’ve completed your morning cleansing routines, begin the day with a glass of warm water. If you feel comfortable having a second glass, that’s fine. After that, listen to your thirst. When you feel thirsty, drink water. However, it’s important not to sip constantly throughout the day, and it’s also not recommended to drink very large quantities at once. Rather than drinking 500 ml in one go, it’s better to drink half a glass to one glass at regular intervals. Another important point is timing. Try to drink most of your water earlier in the day so it doesn’t interrupt your sleep. Many people end up drinking large amounts late in the evening, which can disturb rest. Ideally, aim to meet most of your hydration needs by midday or early evening, around six o’clock. How Much to Drink As a general guideline — unless you’ve been advised otherwise by your healthcare practitioner — most people need a minimum of 1.5 litres of water per day. For many, this may go up to 2 litres. In hot or humid climates, or if you’re very active or outdoors, this may increase to 3 or even 3.5 litres. Anything beyond this should be approached with care and awareness. Why Hydration Matters Adequate hydration supports both blood circulation and lymphatic circulation. It helps keep tissues soft and nourished, supports healthy bowel movements, and improves absorption of nutrients. Proper hydration supports digestion, elimination, brain function, and overall metabolism. In essence, many systems of the body — circulation, digestion, elimination, and cognitive function — rely on adequate and mindful intake of water.

Reflection

Notice how your body responds when you drink water mindfully throughout the day. What changes do you observe in your energy, digestion, or sense of clarity when you adjust how and when you hydrate?
