People as Cues

Key Takeaway

Social cues are powerful—so use them on purpose.

Transcript

By now, you’ve seen how other people can shape your emotions, your decisions, your day-to-day energy. So today we’re going to be considering: If social influence is this powerful, how can you start using it on purpose? Today’s exercise is about being a bit more intentional about the people we are around and how they influence us. So first, think of one behavior or change you’ve been struggling to make. Maybe you want to: Be more present with your kids Leave a job that’s not aligned with your values Start a project that feels vulnerable but meaningful Now ask yourself; Who around me makes this change harder? Who makes it easier—even if I don’t see them every day? Which people, values, or communities could I make more visible in my daily environment? For example, •If you're staying in a job mostly because of social status, notice how often you’re surrounded by people who reward that. What could you do to bring more value-aligned people to mind? (Photos, books, messages, mentors, conversations.) •If you want to focus more on family, make that intention socially salient. Display reminders of those connections—photos, drawings, text messages, even voice notes. •If you're trying to shift habits (health, work, creativity), consider: Who models the version of me I want to become? Can you spend more time with them—or even just make their presence more vivid in your life? Reflection Prompt: •What’s one specific change you want to make? •What’s one way you could use other people—directly or symbolically—to help support that shift? Ok, to wrap up, let’s remember: we are social creatures.  When you surround yourself—physically or mentally—with people who reflect your deeper values, you make it easier to live by design instead of by default.

Reflection

Choose one specific shift you want to make. Write down one way you can use social cues—people, images, conversations—to support that change. Small environmental tweaks can quietly align your actions with your deeper values.
