Module 1: Reality versus ExpectationaudioNaN min
Noticing Your Perspective
Key Takeaway
Expectations quietly shape your emotional world. Understanding this gives you a gentle lever for change.
Transcript
Today we’re focusing on mindset — the expectations part of the equation.
Perspective is how we see things, how we interpret the world around us.
And it’s always running in the background, shaping how we experience life — often without us even noticing.
One of the first steps toward living more intentionally is simply becoming aware of this.
Today is not about changing anything.
It’s just about noticing.
I'd like you to:
•Pay attention today to moments when you feel frustrated, disappointed, pleased, or proud.
•When that happens, take a moment to check in and ask yourself:
How are these emotions a function of what I was expecting?
You might be surprised how often your feelings are shaped more by your expectations than by the situation itself.
And that’s normal.
As we’ll see throughout this course, there’s no judgment here — this is just how the mind works!
Our emotional experience depends a lot on our expectations.
It’s a simple idea — but it has profound implications.
Because it means:
We can shift our emotional experience by tweaking our expectations.
For better or worse.
You’ll see many examples throughout the course, but here’s a simple one:
Imagine you're on vacation and it rains.
•If you were expecting sunshine every day, the rain feels like a huge disappointment.
•But if you expected a mix of weather — hoping for sun, but also planning for cozy indoor days — the rain might actually feel enjoyable.
Same weather, different emotional experience — simply because of expectations.
Reflection
Write down one situation that caused you stress recently. What expectation came with it? Could that expectation be softened or reframed?
