Key Takeaway
Life by design means living more intentionally — aligning your daily actions with your deeper desires.
Happiness is not a superficial goal; it’s about lasting well-being, shaped by both mindset and circumstances.
Research shows both internal perspective and external situation significantly influence happiness.
Mindset shapes how you interpret your experiences, but real-life conditions matter too.
They constantly interact, influencing and shaping one another.
The simple equation Happiness = Reality ÷ Expectations captures this dynamic beautifully.
Small tweaks — both to perspective and to environment — can create powerful, lasting change.
This course will teach you to work skillfully with both sides of the equation.

Welcome to the first core lesson of the first module.
We’re going to dive right in and get to the heart of the matter:
What do we mean by "life by design, not by default"?
In a nutshell, it’s about living more in line with the life you want to live.
It means feeling good about what you’re doing with your days, and with your life overall.
Now, in a way, we could say that "living the life you want" is about "being happy."
But "happiness" is a loaded word. It’s been criticized for being too superficial, and there are a lot of challenges that come with "trying to be happy."
So in this course, we sidestep that a bit by focusing more on living intentionally.
That being said, at the end of the day, it really does boil down to all of us wanting to be a bit happier — and that’s a worthy goal!
And interestingly, there is so much research that touches on this now.
Philosophers and thinkers have pondered the nature of happiness for millennia.
But over the last few decades, researchers have gathered mountains of data — hundreds of studies, thousands of people — using everything from brain scans to interviews, all trying to understand what leads to lasting well-being.
So, what do they find?
Some studies focus on mindset or outlook.
Others focus on external factors like work, relationships, or environment.
You’ve probably heard sayings like:
"Happiness is a choice."
"Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." — Abraham Lincoln
"Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so." — Shakespeare
Or the classic idea that if you see the "glass half full," you’ll feel better.
And there’s real truth in that.
Your perspective matters enormously.
It shapes how you interpret what’s happening around you.
But here’s something interesting:
Even if we say "perspective is everything," most of us spend a lot more time trying to improve our situations — our jobs, our relationships, our health, our finances.
And we’re not wrong to do so!
Because the data shows that your situation matters too.
People in stable relationships, who enjoy their work, and live in safe, supportive environments are generally happier than those who don’t.
Your outer world has real weight.
So, which one is it?
We don’t need a drumroll — it’s both.
Perspective (your mindset) matters enormously.
Situation (your circumstances) matters enormously.
And they constantly interact.
One shapes how you experience the other.
And that interaction is where real change happens.
This course is all about that space — the space between what’s happening around you and how your mind frames it.
We’re going to work on both fronts:
1.Tweaking your environment so good choices become easier.
2.Training your perspective so your mind becomes more an ally than a saboteur.
Years ago, I came across a super simple formula that captures this:
Happiness = Reality \Expectations
When your reality exceeds your expectations, you feel happy.
When your expectations exceed your reality, you feel disappointed.
It’s simple, but powerful — because it shows us:
You can shift your experience by adjusting either part of the equation.
That’s the kind of work we’re going to do together:
Little shifts in your perspective.
Little shifts in your reality and environment.
So that’s the core lesson for today.
In the coming days, we’ll reinforce this idea with micro-activities, reflections, and observations.
For now, just sit with this idea:
Living a life more aligned with the one you want is totally possible — and it involves a slow, steady mix of shifts in your perspective and your situation.
