Nature & Imbalances

Key Takeaway

Your Prakriti is your true nature. Your Vikriti is what’s currently out of balance. Knowing the difference helps you understand your symptoms with compassion — and respond with care instead of judgment.

Prakriti and Vikriti: Your Nature and What’s Out of Sync Take a slow breath in… and exhale fully. In this lesson, we’re exploring a powerful Ayurvedic idea: the difference between who you are at your core (Prakriti)— and what’s out of balance right now (Vikriti). This can help you understand your symptoms… without blaming yourself for them. Let’s start with Prakriti. Your Prakriti is your natural constitution — the unique blend of doshas you were born with. It’s why you’ve always: Needed more sleep than others Or digested food like a furnace Or felt more emotional, more fiery, or more easily overwhelmed than your friends Maybe as a child you were lean, full of ideas, and restless — a Vata nature. Or grounded and kind, always wanting to hug someone — a Kapha core. Or determined, competitive, and a little impatient — strong Pitta energy. Prakriti is what makes you you. Now let’s talk about Vikriti — your current imbalance. Think of it as: “What’s louder than usual in me right now?” Maybe you’re normally easygoing, but lately: “I’m snapping at everyone and getting headaches.” → This may be Pitta imbalance. Or you’re usually focused and organized, but now: “I can’t sleep, my mind won’t stop racing.” → That’s likely Vata showing up. Or maybe you’re usually quick and energetic, but: “I feel emotionally heavy, I keep hitting snooze, and food just sits in my belly.” → Hello, Kapha build-up. Vikriti is not your identity. It’s a state — caused by stress, seasons, travel, grief, overworking, even certain foods or relationships. It’s your body’s way of saying: “Something’s out of sync. I need care.” Your Prakriti shows your strengths. Your Vikriti reveals what needs rebalancing. When you learn to sense both, you stop chasing fixes — and start offering support. Next time you feel “off,” instead of asking what’s wrong with me, ask: “What’s louder than usual in me right now?” That’s where healing begins. You’re not broken. You’re just real. And your body is always speaking to you — with love.
