Key Takeaway
Play is a mood, creativity and connection booster we often overlook as adults...
Transcript
Choose this one if you feel the need for something fun, feel like combining your practice with some 'positive reminiscence' or would like to get active with others in a more spontaneous way (this is a good one for families).
Interestingly, when people talk about things like wellbeing, they can often think that working on wellbeing needs to be something serious and effortful but it’s not the case… pleasure, fun and specifically 'play' are factors in wellbeing and especially at a time like this, should not be overlooked.
How to practice it
Identify one or more non-typical ways that you can get moving, from getting your old swing-ball set out of the shed, or if you have kids, joining in when they chase each other around the garden. Maybe even set up an assault course with them, if you have space.
Or stay indoors and get creative… speed-hoover with your favourite music on or do limbo…
Anything to get active, raise your heart rate and have a bit of fun!
Tips for practising and personalising.
- Look back at things you enjoyed doing as a child when moving around wasn’t about exercising - when you moved around simply for the love of it. Maybe you loved to climb, or kick a ball, or skip…
- Take inspiration from kids… Noey (my daughter) has had me chasing the birds around the beach with her ta number of times and it is actually quite freeing… if you have young children, enjoy the license that being with kids gives you to be playful with less inhibition. We've also recently started dancing together to Riverdance videos on YouTube so that I can share a bit of my (very rusty) Irish Dancing with her.
- It's even an option to simply move your body in funny ways - shake, roll, jump up and down... something playful and silly when on your own honestly will change your mood.
