Savouring helps us gain deeper value from the simple things in life. It boosts and intensifies positive emotions; it makes us want to connect with others and can enhance life satisfaction. When we savour a moment, we essentially ‘nestle into’ all the sensations around that experience, to really enjoy it, deepen it and sustain it for as long as possible. Savouring is simply indulging in the pleasure of a positive experience. What makes something ‘savour worthy’ is totally subjective, and each of us has an immeasurable number of opportunities for savouring in our lives… It could be enjoying a nice view, holding hands with someone you love, getting into bed at night, finishing a run, hearing a favourite tune, opening a new book, drinking from your favourite mug, wearing your most comfortable jumper, or hearing someone laugh. Whatever it is, the most important factor is that you consider the experience a positive one. The great thing about savouring is that it can be done with the simplest of pleasures. Plus, the more you do it, the more you will notice things to savour in your day and the easier you will find it to hold onto the ‘feel-good’ factor they bring. Savouring is also an enjoyable way to practice being more present. SCIENCE TELLS US… The ability to note and savour positive experiences is crucial to well-being. Savouring increases positive emotions and helps us experience these emotions for longer. It also helps us ‘store’ positive moments into memory. Whilst we ‘create’ it within ourselves, studies show that it leads us to want to connect with others when we do that around a moment we’re savouring it increases our sense of life satisfaction. HOW TO PRACTICE IT When you notice a positive moment or event, simply: Slow down so that you make space to enjoy the moment. Focus on all 5 senses (or as many as possible). This sensory perception not only helps you stay present and focussed, but it's also associated with feeling calmer. Pay attention to everything you are enjoying about the experience, to deepen it. Make it last - avoid rushing on from the moment. TIPS FOR PRACTISING & PERSONALISING. Think of something that you find it easy to savour… that’s what you’re aiming to replicate. It might be the feeling you with a lie-in… when you snuggle in, notice how warm, comfortable, cosy it is, focussing on and appreciating all the best bits about it. Look out for opportunities for things to savour...no matter how small or brief. Or think of some points in your day, that you know, are savour-worthy, like your walk with the dog, and set an intention to savour it.
