Your Female Body Rhythms

Learn the four foundational female body rhythms.

Key Takeaway

The female body is deeply rhythmic, and when we live out of sync with these natural rhythms — our daily cycle, menstrual cycle, seasonal cycles, and life phases — we exhaust our life force and disconnect from our vitality. Understanding these rhythms through the lens of the doshas helps us come back into harmony with nature and with our own prana.

All right, I'm gonna introduce the four female body rhythms to you here, and this is so crucial, because this is really the foundation of women's health. As I talked about before, our world is largely built around the more linear nature of the hormonally male body, but the hormonally female body is deeply rhythmic, and we need to understand how to attend to these unique rhythms within our body and how to learn the language that our body speaks to us. So, in my experience, when we can live more in rhythm with the cycles of nature, we are supporting our own prana. We are no longer swimming upstream against the natural flow of nature’s prana. And so, I wanna introduce this to you and teach you about how you can understand these four rhythms through the lens of the three doshas. As I said before, the hormonally female body is the embodiment of the creative potential of nature itself, and when we disconnect from these rhythms, we can experience dis-ease and disempowerment in our body. In my experience, a lot of women's life force and energy and vitality gets cut off because we are overriding or we're essentially just swimming upstream. We’re exhausting ourselves, and it's unsustainable. So one of the things I also wanna mention is that I'm not going to be talking about pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum in this course, because it's really beyond the scope of this. Ayurveda has really specific protocols for supporting women during these times, and absolutely these are foundational initiations in a woman's life, but they really require their own course to address. So, these are the four female rhythms. The first is our circadian rhythm. Throughout the 24-hour cycle of the day, the energetics, the doshic energetics of nature are shifting and changing, and the energetics in our body are shifting and changing. So we can learn to live more in rhythm with that through how we move through our day. Throughout our menstrual cycle, there are three primary phases of our menstrual cycle that are related to the three doshas. Our hormones, our nervous system, and the emotional themes that come up during each of these phases change throughout the cycle, so we can also describe these through the lens of the three doshas. We have seasonal cycles. From the Ayurvedic perspective, there are three primary seasons. Now, of course, this is gonna differ depending on where you live. Where I live, there are three distinct seasons, and so we can really feel these energetic shifts. We can look at these through the lens of the three doshas and understand: – What are the foods I should be eating during this time to balance out the energetics that are becoming excessive? – How are my habits ideally going to be changing during this time? – What's the natural impulse to change during winter as opposed to summer? And then lastly, we're looking at the life phases or life cycles. We can also look at these through the lens of the three doshas—how we are when we're in childhood versus those middle years, the creative and procreative years, versus perimenopause and beyond. There are different energetics, and we can look at those through the three doshas as well. So in the next module, I'm gonna go way more in depth and talk to you about how to look at each of these rhythms, what you can do to support yourself, and give you resources for how to support yourself through each of those.

Reflection

Check in with yourself: Which of the four rhythms feels most out of sync for you right now — your day-to-day rhythm, your menstrual cycle, the season you're in, or the phase of life you're moving through? Write down one gentle adjustment that would help you move more in rhythm with that cycle.
